Inflation and deflation reflect changes in the prices of goods and services consumed by the public in general. The inflation rate is measured by the percentage change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) over time.

To strengthen the quality of inflation data, BPS Jawa Tengah Province (Badan Pusat Statistik Provinsi Jawa Tengah) held the 2026 Consumer Price Survey (Survei Harga Konsumen/SHK) Briefing on Wednesday, 14 January 2026. The activity was opened by the Acting Head of BPS Jawa Tengah Province, Joko Suwarjo, and featured speakers from the Price Statistics Directorate of Statistics Indonesia (BPS Headquarters), Iwan Sofian and Riannie Indrawati.

In his remarks, Joko emphasized that the CPI plays a highly strategic role as the main indicator of inflation and deflation. The CPI is utilized in various aspects, ranging from wage indexation, contract value adjustments, inflation targeting, state budget formulation, to the calculation of real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP). In addition, the CPI serves as an important proxy in describing changes in the cost of living faced by the public.

The calculation of the CPI is supported by two main surveys, namely the Cost of Living Survey (Survei Biaya Hidup/SBH) and the Consumer Price Survey (SHK). The year 2026 marks an important momentum in preparing for the upcoming implementation of the SBH. Meanwhile, the SHK continues to be conducted on a regular basis as the primary and sustainable source of inflation data.

Consistency, accuracy, and strict adherence to methodology in implementing the SHK are key factors to ensure that the resulting CPI data are accurate, reliable, and accountable.

Let us jointly reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding the quality of price statistics as a form of dedication to delivering accurate, reliable, and timely data to support more well-targeted policymaking.
