Turning Complex Data into Stories: BPS of Jawa Tengah Province and UNDIP Hold ELITA Series 10
October 26, 2026 | Other Activities
Semarang, jateng.bps.go.id - Statistics Indonesia (BPS) Jawa Tengah Province continues to strengthen data literacy in academic communities through the 10th series of Statistical Education and Literacy (ELITA). Carrying the theme “Best Practices for Turning Complex Infographics into Easy-to-Understand Storytelling,” the event was held online on Monday, October 26, 2026, in collaboration with the Statistics Corner of Diponegoro University (Undip).
The event featured the Head of BPS Jawa Tengah Province, Ali Said, as the keynote speaker and the Head of the Department of Statistics at Undip, Budi Warsito, as the opening speaker. This collaboration between BPS Jawa Tengah Province and Undip through the Statistics Corner represents a joint effort to improve statistical literacy among academics, particularly university students. Through this initiative, both institutions are committed to broadening statistical knowledge and encouraging the use of data as a basis for decision-making and effective communication with the public.
ELITA Series 10 focused on the importance of data storytelling techniques in communicating statistical information. Accurate data can often be difficult for the public to understand when presented solely through dense and complex infographics. Through this event, participants were encouraged to explore strategies for simplifying data visualization without compromising the essence or accuracy of the information presented.
As a speaker, Dwi Agus Wahyu Riyadi, a graphic design practitioner from BPS Jawa Tengah Province, shared insights and practical guidance on developing engaging narratives. He emphasized that the key to effective data storytelling lies in structuring a narrative around the audience's needs. In this way, statistical figures can convey meaningful messages and provide deeper insights.
Through the presentation, participants gained practical knowledge of techniques for transforming complex infographics into visually appealing, informative, and easy-to-understand content. In addition, the event offered added value to students through electronic certificates that could support the requirements for their Diploma Supplement (Surat Keterangan Pendamping Ijazah or SKPI), as well as opportunities to expand their professional networks with practitioners and statistics enthusiasts.
