From Data to Insight Exploring the Role of AI in Statistics!

Semarang, jateng.bps.go.id - A remarkable collaboration between the Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) of Jawa Tengah Province and the Department of Statistics, Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) successfully held ELITA (Statistical Education and Literacy) Series 9 on Monday, September 28, 2026. The event was opened by Ali Said, Head of BPS Central Java Province , who emphasized that AI should be utilized as a supporting tool at various stages of statistical work, rather than as a complete replacement for human tasks. As users, we must use AI wisely and remain responsible for the meaning and quality of its outputs. Budi Warsito, Head of the Department of Statistics, Faculty of Science and Mathematics, Universitas Diponegoro , also welcomed the event, noting that the topic was highly relevant and expressing hope that it would encourage the beneficial use of AI while maintaining ethical standards across various fields.

Under the theme “From Data to Insight: The Utilization of AI in Data Processing and Data Analysis,” the session was delivered by Siti Mariyah, Head of the Data Science Research Center at STIS & BPS .

This ELITA series explored the definition, history, and benefits of AI, as well as how AI works and can be utilized in data processing. Participants were invited to understand the patterns and challenges associated with AI, with the hope that they could apply AI in their daily activities—from anomaly detection to instant visualization.

Despite the rapid development of AI, an important closing message from the session reminded us that AI is here as an intelligent assistant, not a replacement for humans . Final analysis and decision-making still require critical thinking, validation, and human expertise to ensure that data-driven results remain accurate and free from bias.
